Fun Friday: Bathroom Facelift

A Weekend Project For The Bathroom

We spend so much time in the bathroom, that you’d think we’d make sure it was a place we enjoyed.

For years, we’d tolerated a half-finished downstairs half-bathroom. The walls were yellow, which we thought we’d like, but we ended up not so much—drywall patch on the walls that needed to be sanded down and a half-finished hutch.

Last Friday, I got a burr and decided I would finish it up for my wife. I stopped at E&H Ace Hardware for some Magnolia Paint and paint supplies. I teamed up with the daughter and we got it started for Gretchen. When she got home from work, we had the first coat on the walls.

Sunday we had a trip to Home Depot for some trim and other supplies. Meanwhile, Gretchen headed to the Pallet Tribe and Kohl’s to find some cute mirrors and trivets. The highlight was finding the $90 light we liked at BJ’s Wholesale for only $30.

The Materials

We used Magnolia Paints because it was built off a Killz base. We used two coats on the 150-square-foot room so one gallon worked best. I was very impressed with how it rolled on using average materials from Ace and Home Depot. My biggest thrill was that it was thick enough that Olivia could use it and not have it run all over the place.

One of the biggest things for me was the baseboard in our house was the “white-washed plastic Oak” that was so popular at the turn of the century. My goal since we bought it in 2004 has been to remove it from the house — and I finally started the process with 1×3 boards from Home Depot this weekend. My original plan had been to use unfinished boards that we’d sand down and use the router to give it a unique design. That’s a project for the kitchen or bathroom … not for a project that I’m most focused on getting it done in two-plus days.

Total Estimated Cost

  • E&H Ace Hardware – $85.
  • Home Depot – $85.
  • Pallet Tribe – $15.
  • Kohl’s – $65.
  • Total – $250

Not too bad to change the feeling of the downstairs. The next step is to get the primary bathroom finished after being half-done for nearly five years.
